PHILADELPHIA, PA –  Statement from Council President Darrell L. Clarke (5th District) on the resignation today of Councilmember Helen Gym.

“Councilmember Gym has communicated to me her resignation from City Council, effective today.”

“Councilmember Gym served this legislative body well since she was first elected in 2015 as an At Large member of City Council.”

“Councilmember Gym was a tireless champion for children and public education, and for workers’ rights to a fairer, living wage. She used her position in Council to advocate for significant protections for renters against evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. And she supported City Council’s constant, ongoing efforts to fund and create more affordable housing opportunities for Philadelphians throughout our city.”

“Her voice on behalf of those residents who traditionally lack access to power was strong and unwavering.”

“As with each of the former members who have resigned recently to pursue other endeavors, I look forward to continuing to work with Helen Gym to benefit every Philadelphian.”
