PHILADELPHIA CITY COUNCIL RELEASES FY2017 BUDGET HEARING SCHEDULE

Philadelphia, March 11, 2016 – Philadelphia City Council will begin hearings on Mayor Kenney’s proposed Fiscal Year 2017 Operating Budget, FY2017 Capital Budget and Program, and FY2017-2021 Five-Year Plan on Tuesday, March 29, 2016. Every City department with an operating budget of more than $5 million will testify on spending and performance over the seven-week budget hearings process. All City departments and offices, regardless of size, are required to transmit budget testimony to Council for release to the public.

The School District of Philadelphia will present its FY2017 budget request before Council on Tuesday, May 17, 2016. The public will be invited to testify on the District’s proposed budget on Wednesday, May 18, 2016.

The public is further invited to testify on the FY2017 City budget on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at 5:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at 5:00 p.m.

“City Council shares Mayor Kenney’s vision for a safer, stronger, and more equitable Philadelphia, and next year’s budget should be a blueprint for achieving that vision,” Council President Darrell L. Clarke (5th District) said. “I look forward to a vigorous and respectful dialogue on the most efficient, effective, and fairest ways to fund essential government services as well as anti-poverty initiatives such as universal pre-K and community schools.”

Every City department and office must submit written budget testimony at least two business days before their respective public hearing in a format designed in collaboration with Council to ensure clarity and transparency. All budget hearing materials including departmental testimony, transcripts, videos, and schedule will be available online at the City Council Budget Center (https://phlcouncil.com/FY17-council-budget-center).

Hearing dates and times are subject to change. The public is encouraged to check the City Council Budget Center regularly for updates.
