In Council News, Featured, Rue Landau by Khara Garcia

CM Landau will also honor several queer leaders and community organizations who have added to Philadelphia’s legacy of LGBTQ+ excellence in City Council session

PHILADELPHIA —June 1—In celebration of Philadelphia’s Pride Month, Councilmember Rue Landau today announced a series of major initiatives focused on uplifting Philadelphia’s LGBTQ+ community through public health advocacy, community engagement, and civic recognition. Councilmember Landau is the city’s first openly LGBTQ+ Councilmember.

The month-long effort will feature three cornerstone events:

  • On June 6, an LGBTQ+ Resource Fair (the first of its kind for a City Council office!) connecting LGBTQ+ residents and allies with affirming services, nonprofits, healthcare providers, and advocacy organizations;
  • On June 8, an LGBTQ+ Health Hearing before the Committee on Public Health and Human Services examining the state of queer healthcare access among LGBTQ+ Philadelphians amid ongoing federal funding cuts under the Trump Administration; and
  • On June 11, a Pride Presentation in City Hall during Council session declaring June Pride Month in Philadelphia and honoring LGBTQ+ leaders, organizations, and community leaders helping shape Philadelphia’s role in America’s 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026 and beyond.

“Pride Month is a call to action,” said Councilmember Landau. “At a time when LGBTQ+ people across the country are facing violent attacks on healthcare access, funding for resources, and their basic dignity, Philadelphia must continue to lead with equity and investment.”

The LGBTQ+ Resource Fair will bring together community-based organizations, legal aid providers, housing services, mental health professionals, HIV prevention programs, senior assistance, and other critical supports for LGBTQ+ Philadelphians and their families.

The Committee on Public Health and Human Services hearing will examine how federal funding reductions and policy rollbacks are affecting queer healthcare providers and patients, including access to gender-affirming care, HIV prevention and treatment, mental health services, and culturally competent care. Healthcare professionals, advocates, nonprofit leaders, and impacted residents will be invited to testify. Philadelphians can sign up to testify by visiting this link:

Councilmember Landau also reaffirmed a commitment to protecting and expanding LGBTQ+ healthcare funding in the City of Philadelphia’s budget process, advocating for a $1 million dollar investment into LGBTQ+ healthcare in Philadelphia. Those who support the budget request are encouraged to visit the form above to sign the petition.

The Pride Presentation will declare June Pride Month in Philadelphia and recognize the individuals and organizations shaping Philadelphia’s LGBTQ+ future ahead of the nation’s semi quincentennial in 2026. The event will highlight queer leaders, advocates, small businesses, nonprofits, and cultural institutions contributing to Philadelphia’s vision for America250.
