Philadelphia City Council President Darrell L. Clarke issued the following statement on the retirement of Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey, which will be effective January 7, 2016:

“Commissioner Ramsey has served the City of Philadelphia with excellence and integrity. Philadelphia is a safer city on his watch, as well as a national model for efforts to improve police-community relations. He has earned our gratitude and congratulations as he retires from public service.

Americans are engaged in a difficult, and at times painful, conversation about how modern-day law enforcement should operate. Under Commissioner Ramsey’s leadership we have made progress, but still have much work ahead of us. It is my hope that Philadelphia’s next police commissioner embraces our continued efforts to reduce incarceration, prioritize humanity and compassion in criminal justice, and earn the trust of citizens.”
