Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson (Second District) released the following statement:

“Thank you to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and PennDOT for approving this week SEPTA General Manager Scott Sauer’s request to use up to $394 million in capital assistance funds for daily operations.

This will provide SEPTA with money needed to restore full service to riders for at least the next two years. This is welcome news for the thousands of working people, seniors and students who depend on SEPTA every single day.

But let’s be clear, this is only a short-term solution. Philadelphia and the entire region cannot afford to lurch from crisis to crisis when it comes to public transit.

Transit systems statewide need a sustainable, long-term funding plan that ensures SEPTA can provide safe, reliable, and affordable service for years to come. Philadelphia City Council will continue working with state officials and SEPTA officials to ensure public transit is strong and reliable as Philadelphia prepares to host the world in 2026 for the 250th anniversary of America.
