Legislative Efforts
Philadelphia City Council’s legislative efforts from March included:
- City Council hosted Mayor Jim Kenney for his first Budget address on March 3, 2016 signaling the beginning of the FY2017 Budget cycle. | Watch video | Visit Council’s FY2017 Budget Center
- Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. (4th District) and Councilman Kenyatta Johnson (2nd District) led hearings of Council’s Committee on Public Safety to seek solutions and community input on the issue of gun violence. | Watch videos: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
- Council President Darrell Clarke (5th District) and Councilman Bobby Henon (6th District) also introduced a bill that would bar the City from entering into contracts with companies that use tax inversion or earnings stripping strategies to avoid paying taxes in the United States. | Read the bill.
In the Community
- Councilwoman Helen Gym (At Large) began a series of Education Town Halls to engage with teachers, students, parents and other stakeholders about the state of Philadelphia schools. The town halls were held at Sayre, South Philadelphia and Edison High Schools.
- Councilman Bobby Henon presented a special resolution honoring the organizers of the Philadelphia St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the second oldest parade of its kind in the nation. | Watch video.
- Council President Darrell Clarke was honored by the Philadelphia Public Record as Public Servant of the Year.
- Councilman Kenyatta Johnson invited dozens of faith-based leaders to City Hall for a round-table discussion about reducing gun violence in their communities. Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. and Josh Shapiro, Chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency helped to lead the discussion.
