Philadelphia, June 20, 2016 Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown (At Large) issued the following statement upon the signing of Philadelphia’s Sugar Sweetened and Beverage Tax:

“Today is a historic day for the City of Philadelphia.  As a former educator and staunch advocate for children, youth and underrepresented and under-served communities, this legislation symbolizes what can be accomplished when we work together.  Our children are the ultimate winners in this unprecedented legislative action.

“The goal has always been to provide a sustainable solution that will allow for Universal Pre-K for all, improvements and access to recreation centers for all and community schools for all.  This legislation represents a shared sacrifice for all to fund these essential programs.

“Our work does not stop today. It is just the beginning of a new chapter in the manuscript for building a stronger Philadelphia for all.   As Council President Darrell Clarke has emphasized, we will continue to exercise due diligence during the implementation of pre-K expansion, community schools and Rebuild Philadelphia.

“I will continue to be an unapologetic advocate for diversity and inclusion on behalf of minorities and women who have been underrepresented in the unions that receive work as a result of the rebuild initiatives.  We expect that minority owned businesses and women owned businesses will have access to the jobs that come from the contracting opportunities focused on the rebuild of our public buildings.

“Congratulations to the Mayor for his relentless leadership and to his team of professionals.”
