PHILADELPHIA— Councilmember Helen Gym (At Large) released the following statement in response to the School District of Philadelphia’s announcement regarding turnaround initiatives at eleven District schools:
“Developing an effective internal turnaround system is one of the District’s most important tasks. I commend the District’s decision to not turn over any public schools to outside operators and I am glad to see its responsiveness to community demands about maintaining and building stability in schools through increased supports.
“I remain concerned, however, with the issue of forced staffing turnover, which can undermine school and community cohesion. I will be working closely with the District, its teachers, parents, and students to ensure that there are meaningful opportunities for all members of the community to have a voice and role in the turnaround process.”
