(PHILADELPHIA) May 6, 2021 – Today, Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson (At Large) introduced a resolution calling on Harrisburg to oppose House Bill 972, which would ban transgender athletes from participating in high school and collegiate sports teams aligned with their gender identity. The resolution was co-sponsored by Councilmembers Brooks, Domb, Green, Gym, Parker, Squilla, and Thomas.

“House Bill 972 is discriminatory,” said Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson. “Barring transgender youth from participating in sports in a gender-affirming way is cruel. This legislation has no basis in health or wellness or scientific fact, and it is a clear attempt by a group of adults to bully children. I want to thank my colleagues who co-sponsored this resolution, as well as the many Philadelphia-based institutions who have denounced this legislation.”

The resolution will be voted on during City Council’s Stated Meeting on Thursday, May 13.
