Philadelphia, July 18, 2019 – Philadelphia City Council President Darrell L. Clarke (5th District) today issued the following statement following a city court ruling on commercial tax assessments.

“My office is in close communication with the City Solicitor’s office over today’s ruling on commercial tax assessments in Philadelphia,” Council President Clarke said. “It is our understanding that the city will likely appeal this ruling, and I support such an appeal.”

“The taxes generated by these commercial property assessments generate millions of dollars in revenues not just for the city, but for the School District of Philadelphia as well. Our schools need every dollar available to educate and support our children.”

“Residential property owners are already paying their fair share, and the commercial property assessments approved by the city were designed to create more fairness and equity in how residential and commercial property assessments are determined. Every property owner in Philadelphia must pay their fair share in taxes.”
