Philadelphia, PA – May 29, 2020 – Philadelphia City Council President Darrell L. Clarke (5th District) today issued the following statement in response to the shooting of a Philadelphia Police lieutenant in South Philadelphia:

“Philadelphia Police Lt. Robert Friel is in stable condition following his shooting earlier today in South Philadelphia. Lieutenant Friel was off duty but went to the aid of a fellow officer struggling with an individual. We pray for his swift and full recovery and keep his family in our prayers.

11 people were shot in Philadelphia overnight — three fatally. Homicides from gun violence in our city are up 15 percent in 2020. Shootings involving young people under 18 are up 33 percent. This rise in gun violence comes amid a pandemic that has kept most of us indoors for three months. There are too many guns on our streets, and too much of a willingness to use them. As we make plans to re-open our city, we must recommit ourselves to reducing and preventing gun violence, and making Philadelphia safer for all our residents.”
