Philadelphia – Today, the Philadelphia City Council unanimously passed two bills introduced by Councilmember Anthony Phillips (9th District): First, his Student Pedestrian Safety bill, and second, his bill allowing the Streets Department to crack down on truck parking on any and all public streets in the 9th District.
His Student Pedestrian Safety bill was introduced to support the Streets Department in swiftly installing traffic-calming measures near all public, charter, and private schools. This was important to Councilmember Phillips because, increasingly, motorists are speeding with reckless abandon, endangering pedestrians, including students near schools.
And, with Councilmember Phillips’ legislation allowing the Streets Department to crack down on truck parking, 9th District residents will no longer need an individual bill each time they want to install “No Truck Parking” signs on their block. Instead, the problem can be addressed via regulation through the Streets Department. This will allow for the more efficient installation of no-truck parking signage.
“It is my hope that these pieces of legislation will allow the Streets Department to more easily, and more readily, install traffic calming measures and streamline no-truck parking signage,” said Councilmember Anthony Phillips. Councilmember Phillips further emphasized, “I have heard from too many neighbors that they are frustrated with the slow pace of the installation of traffic calming measures and the slow pace of truck-parking signage installation. So, I am pleased that these bills have passed. I look forward to partnering
with the Streets Department to ensure we keep all our students safe and residential streets clear of commercial vehicles.”
