PHILADELPHIA, October 13, 2017 – City Council passed an Ordinance on Thursday, hiking fines for short dumping introduced by Councilman Derek Green (At Large) late last year.
Bill No. 161105-A replaces the current fine – $300 or an order to clean-up – with a graduated system of penalties. Short dumpers will now face a fine of $1,000 for the first offense, $1,500 for the second, and $2,000 for all subsequent violations. Additionally, the courts are empowered to mandate that the violator clean areas where the short dumping occurred or compensate the City if it has done so.
“Responsible citizens are inundated by waste from a few bad actors who refuse to dispose of their waste properly. Taking a short cut should never cost less than doing the right thing. This ordinance ensures that short dumpers are given more than a slap on the wrist,” said Councilman Green. “Hopefully, this will be a greater deterrent to those who show the least amount of care and concern for the appearance of our streets and neighborhoods.”
The ordinance takes effect immediately.
