(PHILADELPHIA) Friday, March 11, 2022 – Yesterday, Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson (At-Large) partnered with local unions to highlight five young women who are exceptional apprentices in their trades in honor of Women’s History Month.
Held during Women in Construction (WIC) Week, Councilmember Gilmore Richardson honored 5 women apprentices including Keturah McCrae and Ashley Fritzsche, apprentices for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 98, Tylisha C. Williams, an apprentice for the Laborers’ District Council of Metropolitan Philadelphia and Vicinity, Rachel Wherry, an apprentice for the Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Committee of Philadelphia and Vicinity and Jennifer Young, an apprentice for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 21. Each honoree received a citation on behalf of the Philadelphia City Council.
“We need more opportunities to uplift, celebrate and support women in the trades and in nontraditional careers as well as provide additional outlets for young women and men to be exposed to family-supporting and sustaining career opportunities in the trades. A career in the trades is an honorable profession and I am hopeful through these efforts more young people pursue a career in the trades.” said Councilmember Gilmore Richardson.
Honored during the event was also Mollie Elkman, author of the award-winning children’s book “The House That She Built.” Elkman, a Philadelphia native was honored with a resolution introduced by Councilmember Gilmore Richardson for her mission to support workforce development initiatives in home building by generating awareness of the skilled trades to underrepresented communities.
