PHILADELPHIA — Over two Saturdays in December, the Home Gun Checks initiative produced encouraging results – 24 guns turned in voluntarily by citizens at four participating churches. The effort picked up momentum during the second Saturday – 18 guns turned in that day, including one semi-automatic assault rifle. The prior Saturday’s turn ins included two loaded handguns. Any one of these weapons might have been used to take a life. Instead, they were turned in at participating churches, and later collected by police for disposal.
These events were organized by Philadelphia community leaders with the support of the Council President Darrell L. Clarke, members of Philadelphia City Council and the Philadelphia Police Department.
This Saturday, Home Gun Checks and Safe Turn Ins resume in 2020 at two church locations in North and South Philly. Residents are encouraged to check their homes for unauthorized weapons and bring these weapons to the following locations for disposal, no questions asked.
