Councilmember Helen Gym asks Senator Casey to Push for Open Hearing on DeVos, Oppose Nomination

PHILADELPHIA–In a letter to Pennsylvania Senator Robert P. Casey Jr., Councilmember Helen Gym (At Large) urged the senator to push for an open hearing process and to oppose the nomination of Betsy DeVos to lead the United States Department of Education.

The letter comes amidst weeks of grassroots mobilization in opposition to the failed policies that Ms. DeVos has spent her life advocating. In response to mounting pressure, Senate leadership pushed the confirmation hearing from from January 11 to January 17.

Currently, Betsy DeVos, a billionaire heiress, is the only person slated to testify before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions. In the letter, Gym asks Casey to “ensure that [the] committee conducts a robust open hearing that provides an opportunity for outside witnesses and testimony.”
