Background

In recent years, Kensington, a neighborhood in Philadelphia, has garnered national attention due to a surge in illicit drug activities, including open-air drug markets and other criminal offenses. This has sparked growing concern among residents and a pressing need for immediate action to address the issue. Kensington has become a hub for illegal drug purchases, drawing individuals from across the Greater Philadelphia area and throughout the United States. The emergence of synthetic opioids like fentanyl and xylazine has presented significant challenges for doctors and treatment centers in providing effective care for those addicted to these dangerous substances. Moreover, residents in Kensington are grappling with a multitude of issues, including homelessness and encampments, crime and violence, poverty and economic disparities, and limited access to healthcare and social services.

Committee Goals

The Special Committee on Kensington is dedicated to fostering a collaborative effort aimed at analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of current policies to develop data-driven solutions and restore stability in the Kensington area. The committee seeks to improve the quality of life and address challenges within the Kensington community. Initiatives include implementing safe corridors for children, addressing homelessness and addiction, and advocating for longer drug and alcohol treatment services. Additionally, the committee aims to collaborate with city and state officials to extend treatment programs, enhance transportation safety, and ensure Kensington has the necessary resources for success, working closely with the Parker Administration to advance the plan.

The Special Committee is responsible for various duties, including but not limited to convening regular meetings to plan and coordinate activities, evaluating the effectiveness of current programs and policies, identifying the best practices at the local and national levels, engaging community leaders, enhancing the capacity for data collection and analysis, reviewing the allocation of City resources to ensure optimal outcomes, and holding public hearings to report on the Special Committee's progress and gather public feedback.
