Earlier this month, City Council held a hearing to ask if Verizon has lived up to its promise to make Fios available to all City residents.
The franchise agreement Verizon signed with the City promised that every neighborhood would be able to receive Fios by February 26th of this year. The idea was that competition between Verizon and Comcast would lead to better products and lower costs.
If competition is to have any effect, you have to be able to compare Verizon with Comcast. Obviously if you can’t get both, you can’t shop for the best service.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported: “New York City released an audit in June that found Verizon had broken its promise to build its network citywide. Councilman Bobby Henon (6th District) has pointed to New York as evidence of the need for data on how Philadelphia’s build out is going.”
The City’s Cable Franchise Office is asking people who cannot get Fios to complete a simple online form to let them know where Fios is still not available. Use the Feedback button on this page to let the City know if Verizon is living up to its agreement in your neighborhood.
