Philadelphia, July 17, 2019 – Philadelphia City Council President Darrell L. Clarke (5th District) today issued the following statement as four health care organizations announced they have joined together to negotiate for the purchase of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

“Philadelphia’s children matter,” Council President Clarke said. “St. Christopher’s Hospital has been an important part of Philadelphia’s healthcare safety-net for over 100 years. Its closure, following the impending closing of Hahnemann University Hospital, would devastate our city, and we must not allow that to occur.”

“These four institutions – Einstein Healthcare Network, Jefferson Health, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Temple Health — have demonstrated a long-standing commitment to serving the healthcare needs of our neighborhoods.”

“I commend them for working together to ensure that all our families and children, regardless of income, have continued access to high quality medical care, along with the social services they need to live healthy, productive lives.”
