Philadelphia, February 9, 2016 – City Council President Darrell L. Clarke (5th District) on Tuesday issued the following statement on Governor Tom Wolf’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget proposal and the unresolved current-year state budget:

“Governor Wolf today gave us a roadmap toward a stronger future for Pennsylvania’s children, families, and workers. I am grateful for his unwavering commitment to making sure all kids have access to a quality public education.

“Budgets reflect priorities, and the fact that there is still no final spending plan for the current fiscal year demonstrates that lawmakers can have serious differences of opinion. But there must be no dispute that investing in our children’s education is not just morally correct, but economically prudent. We cannot have a strong, competitive workforce without adequately funded education, period. We also must make sure Pennsylvanians have the tools they need to be healthy, productive citizens.

“City Council will continue to work with Governor Wolf, our partners in the General Assembly, and with Mayor Kenney to make sure all of our kids have the tools they need to become tomorrow’s leaders.”
