Jan. 22, 2015 — Philadelphia City Council President Darrell L. Clarke announced developments in new affordable housing and community development initiatives, as well as policy and legislative goals to address income inequality and poverty in Philadelphia.

Council President Clarke also announced the formation of a Special Committee of City Council to review Philadelphia’s potential to become a significant player in the energy industry, as well as a new program, SUPER (School-University Partnerships and Education Resources), under which area colleges and universities partner with all Philadelphia public schools to provide resources and support.

“We should not be in a situation where we have world–class universities — some would question if we’re better than Boston, but at a minimum, we are in the top two — and have the levels in the school district that we currently have. It simply doesn’t make sense,” Council President Clarke said. “So we will be working on this process where we will formalize” education partnerships between universities and the School District of Philadelphia.
