Decorated Iraq Veteran to Remain Active in U.S. Army Reserves
Philadelphia, Nov. 3, 2017 – City Council President Darrell L. Clarke on Friday announced that Carlo Aragoncillo will serve as Director of the Veterans Advisory Commission.
The son of a serviceman, Aragoncillo was born on a Marine Corps base in Yokota, Japan. At the age of three, he relocated with his family to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Aragoncillo earned a Bachelor of Arts from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2007 and a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University in 2010. He joined the U.S. Army in 2011, and went on to serve in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East, as well as in response to Hurricane Sandy.
“During a rigorous selection process among highly qualified candidates, Carlo’s passion for community and for public service really stood out,” Council President Clarke said. “He is not just knowledgeable about the challenges veterans face; he is authentically empathetic and determined to solve problems. City Council created the Veterans Advisory Commission to provide support and services to Philadelphians who have served our nation, and I’m confident our City will have even more effective outreach to veterans under Carlo’s leadership.”
Aragoncillo was recently appointed Commander for Bravo Company, 392nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion, and he will continue to serve as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves. Among the recognitions he has earned are the Meritorious Service Medal, the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
“I am honored to be entrusted with the great responsibility of making sure Philadelphia’s Veterans are able to access services and benefits they have earned,” Aragoncillo said. “The City has always supported and effected change positive change for Veterans, and I am excited to continue serving the community and city that I love.”
Aragoncillo lives with his wife, Shelley, in South Philadelphia. He will begin serving as Veterans Director on Monday, November 13th.
